The Asian Community Center Nursing Home in Sacramento has been fined and deemed responsible for the death of an 86-year-old patient after she choked on a piece of food.
Mary Yip suffered from dementia and had a stroke which made it difficult for her to swallow. A physician had directed caregivers to carefully monitor Yip while she was eating and to only give her soft foods. The nursing home did neither. At some point a staffer noticed her choking but unfortunately it was too late, Yip went into cardiac arrest and died the next day.
After receiving a complaint, the California Department of Health investigated the incident and gave the nursing home an AA citation and an $80,000 fine.
