Illinois Creates An Adult Protective Services Unit

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed a law that establishes a special investigative unit within the Department of Aging. This new unit – tasked with investigating elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation – was created partially in response to the deaths of over 50 disabled adults whose cases had been reported to an abuse hotline.

Like in many other states, leaders in illinois have recognized the growing problem of elder abuse. Illinois began keeping records of elder abuse cases in 1991. That year there were 6,200 reported cases. In fiscal year 2010-2011, that number had grown to almost 11,000 cases per year.
