As America Ages, Elder Abuse is a Growing Concern

10,000 Baby Boomers will reach age 65 each day for the next 19 years. According to Dr. David Thomas, elder abuse cases will grow right along with them. Currently, the National Center on Elder Abuse estimates that 10 percent of all senior citizens in the US  experience physical abuse. That number does not include the financial and emotional abuse and neglect experienced by America’s seniors.

In his article, found here: http://online.wsj.com/article/PR-CO-20130620-909663.html?mod=googlenews_wsj, Thomas asks America’s policymakers to consider the family members who care for a loved one and the emotional and physical burden it takes on them. In the case of caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s, one third of caregivers suffer from depression.

Thomas asks policymakers to consider that budgeting for elder care is not an economic burden. In fact, each dollar spent on elder care equals seven dollars spent in the local economy- a great return on any investment, let alone a morally compelling one.
